Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse
In 1864, from May 8 to May 24th, General Grant and General Lee faced off in my backyard of Spotsylvania, VA. The two generals engaged in what is simply known as, The Battle of Spotsylvania. In the days following the incredible bloody Battle of the Wilderness (also in Spotsylvania County) took place, both Union and Confederate forces raced to gain the tatical positions in Spotsylvania. What followed was an engagement that last for two weeks. The confederate forces were out manned 100,000 to 52,000. However, knowing the grounds and the area Lee out played Grant in the chess match at Spotsylvania.
Below is a reenactment that took place on May 22, 2010, at the Spostylvania Courthouse to relive and honor this tremendous event that occurred here in our area. This reenactment took place over two days, and was conducted on the same grounds that the orginial battle took place.
